The Story of This Rug
The central medallion and corner-piece tradition is one of the best-known compositional schemes in Safavid Persian rug design; the medallion represents the “vault of heaven,” while the corner pieces represent its reflection in the four directions. In the 19th century, Ziegler & Co. brought this scheme to Sultanabad in a soft, root-dyed interpretation. This rug continues that tradition with a small central medallion and a rich network of palmettes.
Why Choose a One-of-a-Kind Handwoven Afghan Rug
- Originality: Only one exists; the same knot rhythm and dye batch can never be replicated.
- Durability of natural dyes: Unlike synthetic aniline dyes, root dyes do not fade; they simply soften over time.
- Ghazni wool: Long-fiber, lanolin-rich wool from high-altitude sheep, providing natural stain resistance and a silky sheen.
- Asymmetrical Persian knot: Finer detail resolution and sharper motif edges than the Turkish (Gördes) knot.
- Investment value: Genuine naturally dyed Afghan rugs gain value through generations of use.
Color and Pattern
An elegant medallion with moss-green and ivory accents sits at the center of a madder-red ground, surrounded by a dense network of Shah Abbas palmettes and lotus rosettes. Mustard, navy, and walnut tones fill the interiors of the palmettes. The border features a chain of palmettes on a cream ground, with a narrow leafy band in the inner guard.
Care Recommendations
- Clean with a vacuum at low speed using a brushless vacuum head.
- Blot spills immediately with a white cotton cloth; do not rub.
- Rotate 180° every six months so sunlight and foot traffic are distributed evenly.
- Leave wet cleaning to a rug specialist experienced with natural dyes.
A small medallion draws a rain of palmettes around itself; this rug is precisely that kind of field of attraction.

Protect Elegance
A delicate care routine should be adopted to preserve the original splendor and silky texture of Carpetdocia's handwoven and natural-fiber pieces, which add value to your living space, for generations to come.
Immediate Action and Contact with Liquids
When liquid is spilled, timing is the most critical factor. Using a clean, slightly damp cloth, remove the liquid from the surface by gently blotting only, never rubbing. Always work in the direction of the rug's pile (the natural direction in which the fibers lie). Rubbing can damage the shape of delicate fibers such as TENCEL™ and viscose. If you are unsure, stop immediately.
Routine Care and Light Balance
For your weekly cleaning routine, always use vacuum cleaners with low suction power. High-powered upright vacuum cleaners and stiff brushes can damage the natural structure of handwoven yarns. To balance the reaction of natural yarns to light and prevent localized tonal differences (fading), we recommend changing the direction of your rug every 2 to 6 months.
The Expert Touch (Professional Cleaning)
Noble textures such as handwoven fibers, TENCEL™, viscose, and New Zealand wool should not come into contact with household chemical cleaners. Such products can irreversibly damage the rug's silky sheen and structural integrity. For deep cleaning, seek assistance only from professional rug care centers specializing in natural fibers.
